Marie stood in the center of class. Now for the final part of your
final. I want you to combine all five drawings into one complete
piece. I don t care how you accomplish this. You can cut them, shred
them, use glue, adhesive spray, or whatever combination of things
you desire. There are supplies around the room if you don t already
have what you may need. I want at least a section from each piece in
the final one. Be creative with this, people. I want to see what you can
do. You have one and a half hours to work on this. Let your
imagination fly.
Andy s head was filled with so many options. He took a minute to
get his thoughts together. If he really focused, he could accomplish
something wonderful. He decided on an idea and got to work. He

began by cutting each piece into even strips with a ruler and a sharp
blade. He cut his pencil drawings vertically and his charcoal drawings
horizontally. Once that was completed he started taking individual
strips and creating shapes at the end of his table. Slowly a figure
started to emerge. The charcoal pieces would be his base. Then he
introduced weaving pieces of pencil drawing into it. He decided not to
put them even widths apart. He liked the way it looked with only
sections of the body made up of both materials.
Marie would periodically walk around the room to see what each
student was working on. Andy didn t mind. He was in his world
again. Paying attention to his instincts and the final result. He vaguely
heard Marie in the background say they had thirty minutes remaining.
He stood back for a moment to look over his piece. He walked
around the table to preview each angle. Once he was satisfied, he
began to adhere it to an additional solid sheet of paper. He would
need this to hold the entire piece together.
Just as he finished, Marie called time. When Andy looked around
the class, he noticed all of the girls had already left. Greg and Donald
walked over and handed their projects to Marie and left as well. Andy
reviewed his work one last time. He was ecstatic about his final piece.
He went over and handed it in to Marie.
She looked it over for a moment. Once again, Andrew, you have
worked your magic. This is breathtaking. I think Eric would be
honored by what you have created.
I appreciate that. I want to thank you for all of your help this
semester. Especially with the advice you gave me. I just wanted to let
you know how grateful I am.
I m glad I could help you, Andrew. Eric is a special young man,
just like you. It s great to see you both together. You will make each
other very happy. She walked over and gave him a quick hug. Now
go find him and enjoy your holidays. I ll see you next semester.
Do you need any help moving stuff back? I ll stay and help you.

You are so nice for asking, but it will be fine where it is for now.
Happy holidays, Andrew.
Happy holidays to you, Marie. Andy packed up his supplies and
headed to his dorm room. He called Eric on his way over.
Hey! Are you finished?
Yes, but I m heading over to my dorm room. I really do need to
pack a few things before they close the building.
I understand. I m still working on something, so just call me
when you re ready to come over.
I will. I ll see you soon.

Eric was nervous bringing Andy back to his house. He hoped
everything would go smoothly. He had worked frantically the last
three hours to get everything set up. They grabbed what they could
out of the SUV. Eric rushed up the steps to get the door open before
Andy arrived. He threw the bag near the wall and stopped Andy just
outside the door. He took the bag out of his hands and threw it next to
the other.
What s going on Eric? You ve been acting weird since you
arrived at the dorm.
I m sorry, babe. I m just& just give me your hand and close your
eyes. Andy did as requested. After he closed the door, he turned
Andy to face it. Please just stand there a moment with your eyes
closed.
What are you up to? Now Andy seemed a bit nervous.
Eric laughed. Don t worry. I m not going to hurt you. He
walked over and lit the candles on the dining room table. He walked
back over. Okay, you can turn around now.
Can I open my eyes?
Drawing on Life 47
Eric took a deep breath. Yes. When Andy opened his eyes, he
stood before him with a single red rose. Happy one week
anniversary, babe.
Andy s eyes were wide open. He looked at Eric, then back to the
rose, and then back to Eric. I can t believe you did this. Andy took
the rose from him and gave him the most passionate kiss they had
shared to date.
When they came up for air, he led Andy to the dining room. He
had cooked dinner earlier. He had set the table with his best dishes.
He had candles surrounding a bowl of water with rose petals floating
on top.
